It means to be born with lots of advantages that other people don’t have, and to be born, really, into a very rich family.

The origin of this expression is from silver being such a precious metal, and of course babies need to be fed with spoons. And we often give spoons to babies as a present, or we give it to the parents of babies as a present. It is sometimes used a little bit enviously of somebody when they have had an easy life because they were born with those advantages.

Idioms... as requested by students

An IDIOM is a manner of speaking that is natural to native speakers of the language. Here are two for this week.

"KNOW IT INSIDE OUT":  to know everything about something. Example in speech: "After studying all semester he knows Principles of Microeconomics inside out".  
"TO BE A POLLYANNA":  to be infectiously optimistic, sometimes unreasonably or illogically optimistic. Example in speech:  "It's nice having her around 'cause she's so optimistic, but she tends to dream of things that are very unlikely to come true. She's such a Pollyanna."   The idiom derives from Pollyanna, a best selling 1913 novel by Eleanor H. Porter that is now considered a classic of children's literature.

FOR TODAY:

1. To be at someone's beck and call: always ready to obey someone's orders.

2. To beat a hasty retreat: to go away or back quickly, especially to avoid something unpleasant.

3. in vain = without success.
Eg.: They tried in vain to persuade her to go

4. To be living on borrowed time:
       - to still be alive after the time when you were expected to die
       - to be doing s.thing that other people are likely to soon stop you from doing.

"SHE'LL BE APPLES":  meaning that everything will be alright. Example in speech: "You'll get your results and she'll be apples".

"SELL LIKE HOTCAKES":   to sell quickly or rapidly with great ease. Example in speech:  "After exams finished, tickets to the rock concert sold like hotcakes."

ko sao, nói đến English thì còn phải nói nhiều, khuyến khích mọi người có gí hay ho post lên nhiều nhiều
